How to prepare for a legal consultation

A little organization can make the first conversation more useful. Start with the issue, the dates, and your questions.

Gather the core documents.

Bring the papers that identify the matter: court notices, charging documents, orders, relevant agreements, or incident records. Keep original documents intact and organize copies by date.

Write a short timeline.

List the important dates and events, separating what you know directly from what someone else told you. Identify other pending proceedings or orders that may be related.

Identify your immediate concerns.

A court date, custody status, driving restriction, family arrangement, or work issue may need prompt attention. Tell the attorney about the deadlines and practical concerns at the start.

Ask about the engagement.

Discuss scope, fees, expenses, communication, and how documents should be shared. Ask whether any related matter would require a separate engagement. The consultation does not itself establish representation.

General information only. Legal requirements and options vary by matter. Seek advice about your specific circumstances.
