What a clear engagement should cover
Before representation begins, the firm and client should understand the matter, the work being accepted, and the fees. A broad practice description does not replace a specific engagement agreement.
Scope and priorities
Identify the proceeding, immediate deadlines, and any related cases or orders. Clarify whether the engagement includes an appeal, a related civil matter, or another proceeding; those may require separate work.
Communication
Confirm how to reach the firm, how documents should be shared, and how significant developments will be communicated. Bring questions to the conversation so decisions are made with a shared understanding.
Fees and expectations
Discuss the fee structure, expenses, and limits of the proposed work before signing. Ask how additional work would be handled. No lawyer can promise a particular outcome; a sound engagement sets realistic expectations.
